Esau pleaded, “But do you have only one blessing? Oh my father, bless me, too!” Then Esau broke down and wept.”
Genesis 27:38 (NLT)
In this present generation, the word “blessing” usually connotes material benefits such as money, good health, fruit of the womb, blissful marriages, academic laurels, career enhancements and the like, attributed to the provision of God. Such divine endowments described as “blessings” are very necessary for a fruitful life of faith in the world and they are to be cherished by every child of God.
However, buried deeply in the mysteries of the scriptures is a one-of-a-kind “blessing” that is not tangible, but gives birth to all the tangible “blessings” that are needed to accomplish divine purposes on the earth. This is the kind of “blessing” mentioned in today’s scripture reading. The backdrop to this narrative was when a “spiritual heirloom” carefully passed on from Abraham to Isaac was given to Jacob instead of being naturally inherited by Esau, who was the firstborn of his father. Esau’s gut-wrenching cry and inquiry, “But do you have only one blessing?” attests to the extreme importance of this distinctive blessing in comparison to all the other kinds of blessings that are desperately sought for by people on the earth.
By the way, prior to this defining encounter, Esau could easily be described as a “blessed” man according to the standards of the world as compared to his younger twin brother: he was operating at the zenith of his profession as a skillful hunter, while scripture was silent about the profession, if any, of Jacob (Gen. 25:27); he was already married with two wives, while his twin brother was still a stay-at-home bachelor (Gen. 26:34; he was the firstborn and loved of the father; and to his credit, never described as deceptive and conniving as his younger twin.
In addition, when Jacob left home and went into exile in Padan Aram, all the abundant material blessings of Isaac were left to Esau. However, an invisible DISTINCTIVE BLESSING, a GENERATIONAL BLESSING, was inherited by Jacob. Within this ONE BLESSING was every imaginable physical blessing known to man. Abraham was keenly aware of this ONE BLESSING that he passed on to Isaac, and both parents of Esau (Isaac and Rebecca) knew of this singular blessing.
Yes, Oasis family, there are many other blessings, but there is a peerless blessing called the “Blessing of Abraham.” This blessing is available to every child of God and received by faith through Jesus Christ. As many children of God are majoring in minoring by chasing the tangible blessings, you are highly exhorted to rather major in the majors by seeking the ONE BLESSING that produces all the tangible blessings. The wealth, healing, joy, peace, houses, spouses, children, ministry, careers and the sought-for material blessings are all hidden in this intangible BLESSING.
As you meditate on this devotional, set your heart to diligently discover and receive this GENERATIONAL BLESSING. You are not only a channel or a seeker of blessing, you have been called to be a carrier and a storehouse of every imaginable blessing known to man, from Archeology to Zoology. You are an Oasis of Blessing! May this revelation never depart from your heart and mind; write it down, meditate on it day and night, confess it, possess it by faith, and walk into every situation knowing that you are highly favored as the heir to this precious “Blessing of Abraham.” I believe that this is the kind of blessing that the Lord spoke about when He said in Matt. 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, (and the “Generational Blessing of Abraham” – emphasis mine) and all these things shall be added to you.” Once again, you (we) are this generation’s OASIS OF BLESSING!
