Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you. – Genesis 41:39-40.
There are two historical personalities whose names usually come up when the issue of having dreams or visions about preferable futures for themselves and their people are raised. Yes, you guessed correctly if you thought about Joseph in the scriptures and Martin Luther King Jr., who gave his iconic speech of “I have a Dream” from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., USA in 1963.
Joseph had two literal dreams from God detailing his future and that of the Israelites, while Martin Luther King Jr. expressed a strongly desired goal or purpose for desegregation and civil rights in the United States of America.
The biblical story of Joseph as a dreamer has been preached and taught in many a sermon and Sunday school class since time immemorial. I believe we’ve all heard several men and women of God preach themselves hoarse with standing ovations and screaming by their listeners whenever the preachers hit the sweet spot of phrases such as: “they can attempt to kill the dream but not the dreamer;” “no dream in your life dies today;” “this is your day to be promoted from the dungeon to the palace;” “you’re being lifted from a slave to a prime minister;” and many such exhilarating statements. However, it is noteworthy that Joseph’s life was not only about dreams, and his promotion did not materialize because of just the dreams.
A careful study of Joseph’s life reveals various milestones that are worthy of meditation and implementation if any child of God would experience realization of their God-given dreams and visions. The first phase of his life, up to the age of 17, was when he received the dreams from God. The statement by his brothers in Gen. 37:19 (NIV), “Here comes that dreamer!” unfortunately branded him as just “The Dreamer” for many generations of Christians. However, from the age of 17, when he was sold as a slave to the Ishmaelites, until he stood before Pharaoh in Egypt at 30 years, scriptures do not tell us that he received any dream(s) again from God. God, rather, gave other people who were divinely connected to his destiny dreams, notably the butler in the prison and Pharaoh, and Joseph matured to the higher state of an interpreter of dreams. Dreams or visions are not worth much without divine interpretation and realization. In the first phase of Joseph’s life, he was a passive dreamer, but in the second phase in Egypt, he received from God and progressed to become an active interpreter of dreams. He was not just a “dreamer;” he also had insights into spiritual things; and received divine wisdom to implement them in the physical realm.
The dream or vision brings hope and excitement of God’s intention in the lives of His children, but beyond that, divine interpretation gives the building blocks for manifestation. Dreams or visions do not materialize automatically or just by liking it on social media, typing amen and sending it to ten other people. A child of God must mature spiritually and move beyond being just a dreamer to having clear insights into godly dreams and visions to see the attendant physical manifestations.
You’re a “Blessed Seed” and joint heirs with Jesus Christ of the “Blessing of Abraham.” Like Joseph, your destiny is to leave the dungeon of slavery to the throne of the Kingdom of God. Don’t just be a “dreamer.” There is a glorious phase of maturity, interpretation of dreams and divine wisdom for the manifestation of your generational blessing awaiting you. From a slave to a king; that shall also be your testimony as a covenant child of God who inherited the unique “Blessing of Abraham,” The Lord will hasten His word to perform it! Happy Winterfast!
