Kingdom of Power (October Fast 2019 – Day 19)

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. – 1Cor. 4:20 (NIV)

The Power of Petroleum

The past decades have witnessed amazing economic and architectural developments in certain countries in the Middle East such as the United Arab Emirates. The socio-economic engines of these nations run predominantly on their large reservoirs of petroleum, which is the major source of energy that powers development on the earth. One can therefore say that these nations and kingdoms run on the power of petroleum.

Power of a divine kind

There is another kingdom operating on the earth heralded by John the Baptist and established by Jesus Christ called the Kingdom of God that also runs on power of a divine kind. The birth of this Kingdom was prophesied by the prophet Daniel during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar and it came to existence through the sheer manifestation of divine power. The image that represented the ancient empires of the earth was broken down to pieces by the explosive force of the stone that was hewn without hands, Jesus Christ. In Matt. 11:12, the Lord stated that this Kingdom expands by violent force. This is the only kingdom established by the King of kings who came to the earth to live and die but resurrected with a rare power that could not be restrained by all the forces of Hell and Hades; leaving an empty tomb as a witness of indomitable power.

Our scripture reading for today delineates the dynamics of the Kingdom of God of which we are royal citizens. Everything related to this Kingdom is designed to rise above mere rhetoric to the demonstrative realm of explosive power. Beyond the pages of the bible and the extensive library of Christian literature available to Christians must be the raw demonstration of the power of God. Anybody can argue on the veracity of the scriptures but they are unlikely to see power associated with the word of God and still deny it. The Kingdom of God runs on divine power and anything short of it is a process of futility. Like automobiles and other machinery that cannot function without power, the Kingdom of God cannot also operate and advance on earth without divine power.

We have attended enough church services, revival meetings, camp meetings, symposia, mega fests and all the deftly worded Christian programs with connotation of spirituality. We have memorized a lot of scriptures and taken copious notes from different ministers of God. We have even created and polished our own language called “Christianese,” which is peppered with words like anointing, fire and glory. We have shouted a lot of ‘amens’ and ‘hallelujahs’ in and outside the church. However, conspicuously missing among us is the literal EXPLOSIVE POWER OF GOD in our day-to-day lives on earth. The world is not overly impressed with our form of godliness without power. After all the talk, debates and expert opinions, the world and all other religions cannot deny the demonstrable power of God in every aspect of our lives. The Kingdom of God is not cheap talk, it runs on divine power and so must you!

In the face of bitter opposition to the gospel, including bodily harm and death, the disciples in the early church cried to the Lord in Acts 4:29-30, “Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.” They earnestly sought for the power of the Kingdom, and the response of the Lord was clearly stated in Acts 4:33, “And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.” It is our turn to extend the frontiers of the Kingdom of God. “Flow, Oasis of Kingdom Power, Flow.”
